Customers expect Wi-Fi. What they shouldn't get is access to the same network your EFTPOS, POS and office computers use. Here's how guest Wi-Fi should be set up, and the extras that make it work for your business rather than against it.
Keep guests on their own network
The most important part is separation. Guest Wi-Fi should be a completely separate network that can reach the internet and nothing else. On proper business equipment this is done with separate network segments, so a customer's phone can't see your printers, cameras or POS, even by accident.
Stop guests slowing you down
Set a speed cap per guest. A few customers streaming video shouldn't be able to slow your card payments. A modest limit per device is plenty for email, maps and social media.
Choose how guests get on
- Accept terms. Guests see a login page, accept your terms, and they're online. Easy for cafés and waiting rooms.
- Password. One guest password, printed on the menu or counter, changed every so often.
- Vouchers. Codes that last an hour, a day or a week. Good for gyms, venues and co-working spaces that want to control who's online.
- Paid access. Guests pay by card for a time pass. Suits hostels, event venues and anywhere Wi-Fi is part of what you sell.
Make the login page yours
A branded login page with your logo and a short welcome looks professional, and once guests are connected you can send them to your website, menu or a special offer.

- time limits per visit, so nobody camps all day on one coffee
